SUMMARY:San Marcos river cleanup (with Rebels)
DESCRIPTION:The Diving Rebels and the Scubadillos will continue what has become an annual tradition of the underwater cleanup of the San Marcos River on Saturday\, January 25th\, 2025.  As usual\, we will meet at the parking area of Rio Vista Park to gear up.  Once folks have geared up\, we will be shuttled to the parking area near the Aquarena Springs Drive bridge\, from where we plan to enter the water.  Last year\, Mike Schaefer\, a former Dillo member now living in San Marcos\, coordinated the shuttle operation with members of the Kissing Tree Pool Club there in San Marcos.  This was greatly appreciated and Mike will have his club assist in this again this year.  Please see the attached map noting these locations. \nWe want to get in the water about 1 PM\, so please plan your arrival accordingly.  Before we get in the water\, we will get everyone together for a group photo there at the access point below at Aquarena Springs Drive bridge.  We will exit at Rio Vista Park\, about one mile downstream.  The attached map also notes the exit location. For the most part\, this is a relaxing fresh-water drift dive and in some places early in the dive you can just obtain a stable\, motionless position and let the current move you along.  Depending on the water level\, there may be some rather shallow spots about one-halfway along the dive\, but these are navigable. \nThe underwater distance is about one mile and folks spend anywhere from 45 – 90 minutes underwater\, depending on their trash gathering efforts. \nIf you would like to participate in the underwater cleanup\, please bring a mesh bag of some sort to collect the trash/treasures you may find.  Extra mesh bags will be available if you don’t have one.  If you prefer to just drift along for the ride and not collect trash\, that is certainly permissible as we want you to enjoy the dive. \nWe will have 1st and 2nd place prizes for the collector of the most trash and as well as 1st and 2nd place prizes for the collector of the most unusual piece of trash\, as voted by the participants.  So\, bring your mesh laundry bags and/or onion sacks and be prepared to scour the river bottom for collectables. \nAs usual\, Steve Ogden (me) is the outing coordinator\, and my cell number is (214) 641-6013.  If you would like to participate in this event and either did not sign up at the Rebels January meeting or are a member of the Dillos whose meeting was a weather casualty\, please contact me either at my cell number via either call or text.  Also\, let me know if you will join us for dinner\, noted below.  For the day of the outing\, call me if you are running a bit late so we know to wait for you.  If anyone is interested in carpooling\, you can either make your own arrangements or contact me. \nAfter the dive\, for those who are interested\, we will meet for our traditional Saturday evening dinner together. For the past few years\, we have eaten at a wonderful restaurant called The Root Cellar Cafe (http://www.rootcellarcafe.com/)\, so we will look to go there again.  The Root Cellar manager has been very generous is providing gift cards for the restaurant and I will pursue this again. \nOn Sunday morning\, we most likely will follow our past practice of breakfast at Herbert’s Taco Hut (http://www.herbertstacohut.com) for those who would like to join us there. \nThere are a number of reasonably priced motels in the San Marcos area\, fairly close by the river. You might want to check out https://www.booking.com/city/us/san-marcos.html. In a couple of previous years\, I was able to book a room in a private home using https://www.airbnb.com/s/San-Marcos–TX–United-States/homes. Camping is also available in the area if you are so inclined. \nFor those outing participants who have completed the Dive Authorization Course (DAC) or the former Diving for Science or Scientific Diver certification programs and are interested in performing a volunteer dive in Spring Lake on Sunday\, there is again an opportunity for you to perform a volunteer dive in the lake.  All requests to dive are now submitted through the online system. You can find the form using the following link. https://www.meadowscenter.txstate.edu/Stewardship/Diving/AquaCorps/volunteer-dive-request. \nPlease contact me with any questions. \n  \nSteve “Oggie” Ogden \n(214) 641-6013 \n

SUMMARY:underwater scubadillo poker run @ Wheeler Branch Reservoir Park
DESCRIPTION:Join us Saturday\, September 14th\, as we celebrate our annual Scubadillo Poker Run\, where dive-buddy contestants compete for the best five-card poker hand from our underwater “playing table.” \nWHERE\nWheeler Branch Reservoir in Glen Rose. Take I-35 south of Dallas\, then Hwy. 67 to Glen Rose. In Glen Rose\, turn right on Bo Gibbs Boulevard for one mile\, then turn right/north on CR 301. In ½ mile\, veer to your left when you see a “Y” and a small brick wall welcoming you to the park/reservoir. We’ll post a Dillo sign there\, too. NOTE: This turn onto CR 326 can be easy to miss. Follow the road for ½ mile to the park entrance. Once inside\, look for our bright yellow banners. We’ll be near the water\, not in the big pavilion. \nPARK FEE & RULES\nPark entrance fee is $10 per person. Cash only. Please have exact amount\, as they’d rather not deal with giving change\, etc. Overnight camping is not allowed. Nice restrooms are on site. Pets are allowed in the park but must be kept on a short leash. \nFOOD\nWe’ll fire up the grill around noon with plenty of yummy burgers and “fixins” plus a mound of healthy grilled veggies. We appreciate everyone bringing some type of side dish to share (savory OR sweet). Bottled water provided. The feast is FREE to active members\, and $10 for non-members. (PS: you can become a member on the spot; there are several more activities between now and the end of 2022. 😉 \nPOKER TIME\nThe “playing field” will be laid out at 12’-15’ (the water is low this year) with two decks – a red and a blue – of special plastic-coated cards. Each card is attached with a binder clip to a zig-zaged line. Each two-buddy team will be allowed to collect a maximum of five cards at one time. You’ll have an hour to improve your hand as you take and replace cards to create the winning standard poker hands (flushes\, straights\, four-of-a-kind\, full houses\, etc.). Prizes will be awarded to the top poker hands. And don’t worry if you’re by yourself; we’ll buddy you up if you don’t already have one. \nWHAT TO BRING\n– Folding chair\n– Sunglasses\, sunblock\, hats\, etc.\n– Beverage of choice other than water (be Discreet if you have adult bevs)\n– Side dish to share during lunch\n– Wagon to haul gear from parking lot (optional\, but just know it’s a bit of a walk)\n– Swimsuits and dive gear\, towels. BTW\, if you don’t want to dive\, that’s fine. Join us for the fun AND to swim in the “cool” water if you want.  \nWATER TEMP\, etc.\nFor your visual enjoyment\, if you want to continue diving after the poker run\, you’ll find two helicopters\, a bus\, a dive platform and fire hydrant. Water temp is 80+ degrees\, and in previous years\, there was a hard thermocline after 35’. With the HOT weather this summer\, you may or may not hit the thermocline. A skin or 1-3 mil wetsuit should be ample coverage\, especially when you spend an hour in shallow water during the poker game. \nTIMING (a p p r o x i m a t e)\nArrive 11 – 11:30 a.m. Lunch around 12:30. Poker Run after lunch\, 1:30 ish. Prizes awarded at 4. We’ll wrap up by 5 p.m. Some of you might want to stay longer to dive more – and that’s completely up to you. If you’ve got the air\, use it! 😉 \n  \nFor updates or Q&A\, visit our Scubadillo Dive Club Facebook GROUP or our Meetup page.

SUMMARY:Luau @ Wheeler Branch Reservoir Park
DESCRIPTION:LUAU! \n…with the Dillos and Rebels \nSaturday\, June 8\n11 a.m. to 6 p.m.\nWheeler Branch Reservoir\nGlen Rose\, Texas\n\n\n\n\n\nThe partying pineapples are back! They’re having FUN at a Luau – which is exactly what you’ll be doing when you join us June 8 for fun and games\, laughter\, sunshine\, camaraderie\, prizes and FOOD! \nDiving you ask? Of course you can dive\, but it’s not required. \nThis annual funfest – a combo Scubadillo and Diving Rebels event – is a day to get out of the house\, enjoy some games in the water and on land\, eat\, party and hang with your favorite fun divers. You don’t want to miss it! It’s also our annual fundraiser. Members and non-members will need a ticket.\n\n\nWhere\nWheeler Branch Reservoir Park in Glen Rose. This scenic lake park is the ideal venue for swimming\, diving\, dry land games and water games (for prizes!). We will have a raffle\, a silent auction — and of course\, our Luau feast\, featuring pulled pork\, grilled by our master chef\, Larry Kouba. We’ll be at the pavilion. Look for the Scubadillos bright yellow banners.Get your tickets  \nThis is our fundraiser\, so everyone pays the same\, member or not. Buy your tickets here online by end of day Wednesday\, June 6. $10.30 each. You may pay $10 in cash or credit at our June 6 meeting. Tickets go up to $15 starting June 7 and can be purchased at the event. \nNo Scubadillo membership is required. In fact\, we want to see you\, your pals\, family members … bring the whole gang! There’s plenty to do\, including swimming and hiking. Don’t delay in getting your ticket(s). This helps us be prepared for enough food and picnic supplies.  \nPark fee\nPark entrance fee is $10 per person. Cash only. (This is separate from the Luau ticket.) Overnight camping is not allowed. Pets are allowed in the park\, but must be on a short leash (6 ft. or less) and you have to pick up any deposits. You’ll find nice\, clean bathrooms on site. \nWhat to bring \n\nSide dish to share\nFolding chairs\nSunshades\, sunblock\, hats\, etc.\nBeverage of choice (be discreet if you have adult beverages)\nSwimsuits\, towels and dive gear (for optional lake dive)\nAfternoon munchies to tide you over (Luau feast starts at 1 p.m.)\nCash for raffle and silent auction ($1\, $5\, $10\, $20 bills)\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDiving\nThe lake has a dive platform\, a sunken bus and helicopter\, and lots of fish! Might be chilly; 5 mil suit recommended. Be sure to arrive early (approx 11 a.m.) if you intend to dive. Expect low 70s on the surface at this time of year and colder past the various thermoclines as the lake can get past 60 feet for true deep dives. Bring proper hoods\, gloves and lights if you go this deep as it is a night dive at this depth – but the water gets clearer! Diving begins in the morning or when you arrive.\nRaffle\nBring plenty of cash for the raffle to win great prizes.Silent auction\nGet some dive gear at a super great price! Buy a gift basket full of fun items. Spend some money to help support the club. \n\nChow down!\nThe Luau Feast begins at 1 p.m.-ish. We’ll have pulled pork. Bring a side dish to share. To avoid eight tubs of potato salad\, please let us know what you’re bringing. Sign up here. This also helps us know how many folks are coming so we can have enough meat.Visible alcoholic beverages are not allowed at the park (like most park rules)\, so remember to bring appropriate beverage containers for your favorite drink. \nLet the games begin!\nWe’ll start the games around 3:30. Horseshoes\, batting\, water balloon toss and water cup toss\, along with water cannons and water bucket competitions for two-person teams. Prizes will be awarded! Bring your Frisbees\, if you like. This is a family-friendly event. Kids are welcome to participate. \n\nIt’s a Luau. Feel free to dress up in your favorite tropical attire!\nGetting there\nGlen Rose is about 77 miles from DFW Airport\, off Hwy 67 south of the Fort Worth area and slightly southwest of Waxahachie. You could do an easy day trip from Dallas. If you make a weekend of it\, you could visit the nearby Dinosaur Valley State Park or explore the 1\,700-acre Fossil Rim Wildlife Center.\nFrom the Dallas area\, take I-35 past the Dallas Zoo and take the right-hand split on Hwy. 67 to Duncanville\, Cedar Hill\, Midlothian\, Alvarado and Cleburne. In Glen Rose\, take Bo Gibbs Blvd. (CR 301) near the Expo Center/La Quinta intersection and go a half-mile west to see the park entrance where you will veer left at the “Y” intersection onto CR 326. Look for the Scubadillo signs and banners at the pavilion.

SUMMARY:WINE & CHEESE PARTY AND ARCTIC DIVE WITH THE REBELS
DESCRIPTION:It’s February! \nTime for our Annual Arctic Dive and Wine & Cheese Event at Lake Murray\, OK. The Diving Rebels & Scubadillos will be heading north of the Texas boarder to Oklahoma on Feb. 24th. We would like to invite any interested divers and non-divers to join us. Lake Murray State Park is located about 24 miles north of the Texas border just off I-35 and 7 miles northeast of Marietta\, OK. This is an easy day trip – only 1:30 – 2:00 hours from DFW. As in past years\, the park has been opened a week earlier than normal to accommodate our event. It will be open to the public also at that time but is not publicized so on the park website. Mr. Joseph Hahn\, the Lake Murray State Park manager (also a diver) is to thank for this. The Diving Rebels have reserved three of these campsites – 9\, 17\, and 19. Site 17 will be utilized exclusively for he outing operations area – food\, contest\, etc. Sites 9 and 14 are available for reservation through Jim Magnuson with payment at the rates noted above. Many sites are still available for camping BUT none are reserved for us\, so if you want to camp\, we urge you to reserve your spot ASAP. To reserves the sites\, go to https://guestrez.megasyshms.com/…/lake…/SearchCriteria/ be sure to select the date: Feb 24 and the park MARIETTA LANDING and CLICK SEARCH to see what is available\, or you can call the park office at (580) 223-4044 and ask for Tracy. There may also be accommodation at the park lodge as well as cabins. Traditionally\, for those spending the night at the park\, we meet for breakfast at the beautifully refurbished lodge as the dining area provides an impressive overlook of the lake\n \nDIVING\nAlthough there is no official dive time scheduled\, there is an unofficial time dive of 11 AM there at the campground boat ramp area. Should you not be able to make that time\, the lake is continually open for your diving pleasure on an ad hoc basis\, so you can make your own arrangements as desired. It should go without saying that one needs to be prepared for cold water diving so bring the appropriate gear (thick wet suits or drysuits).\n \nWINE AND CHEESE CONTEST\nWe will have our famous and traditional wine and cheese contest where we utilize a panel of just slightly less than sommelier-quality judges (if you don’t have an entry\, you can be a judge) who will rate and award prizes for best red wine\, best white wine\, worst wine\, and best cheese. The judging will begin about 3:30 PM. So\, scour your wine cellar or favorite liquor store to bring your best/worst red and white wines that will be judged by an erudite panel of vintner wannabes who will closely taste and scrutinize the entries for bouquet\, flavor\, clarity\, and all such hoity-toity wine things. We’ll award “winner” gift certificates for first prize for the best red and white wines. We’ll also award a “loser” gift certificate for the worst wine. After the wine contest\, we’ll choose the best cheese\, and the winner will also win a gift certificate (no entries for worst cheese\, please!!). We need judges for both contests\, so if you are not a contest participant or related to a contest participant and would like to judge\, please let me know. Please bring your bottles uncorked to the judging site and place them in the provided labeled paper bags to maintain the “secrecy” of the process. After the conclusion of the contest\, please feel free to incorporate the left-over wine and cheese into the forthcoming meal.\n \nFOOD\nThe Diving Rebels plan to serve a meal at about 4:30 pm\, consisting of a main dish of brisket\, turkey\, and sausage. We are asking that you bring a favorite side item of either a salad or desert and your own drink. We will also provide water and tea. To assist in meal planning and preparation\, we’re asking attendees to purchase tickets. Through February 18\, each ticket costs $10. After that date and at the event\, each ticket costs $15. If you would like to attend and have not yet obtained your ticket\, you can contact me\, and I will reserve and mark a $10 ticket for you on assurance of surety of your first born that you will attend by contacting Steve at (214) 641-6013. I’ll hold your ticket if you can give me a confirmation. \nRAFFLE\nAfter the meal\, we will have our traditional raffle featuring all kinds of wonderful items. We ask if you have good-as-new dive related items that could be used by anyone\, that you consider donating these for this activity and allow someone else to experience the joy in the use of these items that you formerly experienced. For those of you who will be bidding\, please bring cash.\n \nBONFIRE\nIf you have some good quality firewood that is not infested with any insect pests or contaminated with any chemicals\, please feel free to bring this along and we will see about creating a moderate campfire to create some warmth and a nice effect. Be sure to bring a comfortable chair for sitting around the fire and visiting at the end of the day.\n \nLODGING\nRV and tent camping is available at Marietta Landing campground. The campground was redesigned primarily for RV camping with an expansion of the paved areas and a reduction of open and uncovered areas. A map of the campground is provided below. The RV rates for each campsite range from about $32 – $40 per night. Each site can also accommodate up to two tents. The first tent reservation will be $32 and the second tent at the same site is $16. Each of these reservation rates also includes a day pass for that vehicle at no extra charge. If you have made a reservation to spend the night in a tent\, RV\, cabin\, or lodge\, you will be provided with a day ticket for entrance to the park. If you are just there for the day\, you will need to go on the park website (provided below)\, to purchase a $10 car pass or you can stop at the park headquarters and purchase a pass for $10/vehicle. So\, you might carpool\, if not spending the night. The Diving Rebels have reserved three of these campsites – 9\,17 and 19. Site 17 will be utilized exclusively for the outing operations area – food\, contest\, etc. Sites 9 and 14 are available for reservation through Jim Magnuson with payment at the rates noted above. She is really a delight to work with and she told me she would be happy to work with anyone that would like to make reservations or has any questions. Should you happen to speak with Joseph\, please give him special thanks for working with us so generously this year. Note that you must book a minimum of two nights and if you are planning to have two tents on the site\, you need to specifically add (and pay) for that. There may also be accommodation at the park lodge as well as cabins. The park website is noted as follows. https://www.travelok.com/state-parks/lake-murray-state-park Go to https://guestrez.megasyshms.com/…/lake…/SearchCriteria/ to see what camp sites are available. Should there be a potential weather impact develop as we get closer to the event\, we will update as necessary. Please contact me with any questions\, comments\, or complaints. Thanks\, and we look forward to seeing you that day. – Steve Ogden 214.641.6013.
