SUMMARY:underwater scubadillo poker run @ Wheeler Branch Reservoir Park
DESCRIPTION:Join us Saturday\, September 14th\, as we celebrate our annual Scubadillo Poker Run\, where dive-buddy contestants compete for the best five-card poker hand from our underwater “playing table.” \nWHERE\nWheeler Branch Reservoir in Glen Rose. Take I-35 south of Dallas\, then Hwy. 67 to Glen Rose. In Glen Rose\, turn right on Bo Gibbs Boulevard for one mile\, then turn right/north on CR 301. In ½ mile\, veer to your left when you see a “Y” and a small brick wall welcoming you to the park/reservoir. We’ll post a Dillo sign there\, too. NOTE: This turn onto CR 326 can be easy to miss. Follow the road for ½ mile to the park entrance. Once inside\, look for our bright yellow banners. We’ll be near the water\, not in the big pavilion. \nPARK FEE & RULES\nPark entrance fee is $10 per person. Cash only. Please have exact amount\, as they’d rather not deal with giving change\, etc. Overnight camping is not allowed. Nice restrooms are on site. Pets are allowed in the park but must be kept on a short leash. \nFOOD\nWe’ll fire up the grill around noon with plenty of yummy burgers and “fixins” plus a mound of healthy grilled veggies. We appreciate everyone bringing some type of side dish to share (savory OR sweet). Bottled water provided. The feast is FREE to active members\, and $10 for non-members. (PS: you can become a member on the spot; there are several more activities between now and the end of 2022. 😉 \nPOKER TIME\nThe “playing field” will be laid out at 12’-15’ (the water is low this year) with two decks – a red and a blue – of special plastic-coated cards. Each card is attached with a binder clip to a zig-zaged line. Each two-buddy team will be allowed to collect a maximum of five cards at one time. You’ll have an hour to improve your hand as you take and replace cards to create the winning standard poker hands (flushes\, straights\, four-of-a-kind\, full houses\, etc.). Prizes will be awarded to the top poker hands. And don’t worry if you’re by yourself; we’ll buddy you up if you don’t already have one. \nWHAT TO BRING\n– Folding chair\n– Sunglasses\, sunblock\, hats\, etc.\n– Beverage of choice other than water (be Discreet if you have adult bevs)\n– Side dish to share during lunch\n– Wagon to haul gear from parking lot (optional\, but just know it’s a bit of a walk)\n– Swimsuits and dive gear\, towels. BTW\, if you don’t want to dive\, that’s fine. Join us for the fun AND to swim in the “cool” water if you want.  \nWATER TEMP\, etc.\nFor your visual enjoyment\, if you want to continue diving after the poker run\, you’ll find two helicopters\, a bus\, a dive platform and fire hydrant. Water temp is 80+ degrees\, and in previous years\, there was a hard thermocline after 35’. With the HOT weather this summer\, you may or may not hit the thermocline. A skin or 1-3 mil wetsuit should be ample coverage\, especially when you spend an hour in shallow water during the poker game. \nTIMING (a p p r o x i m a t e)\nArrive 11 – 11:30 a.m. Lunch around 12:30. Poker Run after lunch\, 1:30 ish. Prizes awarded at 4. We’ll wrap up by 5 p.m. Some of you might want to stay longer to dive more – and that’s completely up to you. If you’ve got the air\, use it! 😉 \n  \nFor updates or Q&A\, visit our Scubadillo Dive Club Facebook GROUP or our Meetup page.

SUMMARY:San Marcos river cleanup (with Rebels)
DESCRIPTION:The Diving Rebels and the Scubadillos will continue what has become an annual tradition of the underwater cleanup of the San Marcos River on Saturday\, January 25th\, 2025.  As usual\, we will meet at the parking area of Rio Vista Park to gear up.  Once folks have geared up\, we will be shuttled to the parking area near the Aquarena Springs Drive bridge\, from where we plan to enter the water.  Last year\, Mike Schaefer\, a former Dillo member now living in San Marcos\, coordinated the shuttle operation with members of the Kissing Tree Pool Club there in San Marcos.  This was greatly appreciated and Mike will have his club assist in this again this year.  Please see the attached map noting these locations. \nWe want to get in the water about 1 PM\, so please plan your arrival accordingly.  Before we get in the water\, we will get everyone together for a group photo there at the access point below at Aquarena Springs Drive bridge.  We will exit at Rio Vista Park\, about one mile downstream.  The attached map also notes the exit location. For the most part\, this is a relaxing fresh-water drift dive and in some places early in the dive you can just obtain a stable\, motionless position and let the current move you along.  Depending on the water level\, there may be some rather shallow spots about one-halfway along the dive\, but these are navigable. \nThe underwater distance is about one mile and folks spend anywhere from 45 – 90 minutes underwater\, depending on their trash gathering efforts. \nIf you would like to participate in the underwater cleanup\, please bring a mesh bag of some sort to collect the trash/treasures you may find.  Extra mesh bags will be available if you don’t have one.  If you prefer to just drift along for the ride and not collect trash\, that is certainly permissible as we want you to enjoy the dive. \nWe will have 1st and 2nd place prizes for the collector of the most trash and as well as 1st and 2nd place prizes for the collector of the most unusual piece of trash\, as voted by the participants.  So\, bring your mesh laundry bags and/or onion sacks and be prepared to scour the river bottom for collectables. \nAs usual\, Steve Ogden (me) is the outing coordinator\, and my cell number is (214) 641-6013.  If you would like to participate in this event and either did not sign up at the Rebels January meeting or are a member of the Dillos whose meeting was a weather casualty\, please contact me either at my cell number via either call or text.  Also\, let me know if you will join us for dinner\, noted below.  For the day of the outing\, call me if you are running a bit late so we know to wait for you.  If anyone is interested in carpooling\, you can either make your own arrangements or contact me. \nAfter the dive\, for those who are interested\, we will meet for our traditional Saturday evening dinner together. For the past few years\, we have eaten at a wonderful restaurant called The Root Cellar Cafe (http://www.rootcellarcafe.com/)\, so we will look to go there again.  The Root Cellar manager has been very generous is providing gift cards for the restaurant and I will pursue this again. \nOn Sunday morning\, we most likely will follow our past practice of breakfast at Herbert’s Taco Hut (http://www.herbertstacohut.com) for those who would like to join us there. \nThere are a number of reasonably priced motels in the San Marcos area\, fairly close by the river. You might want to check out https://www.booking.com/city/us/san-marcos.html. In a couple of previous years\, I was able to book a room in a private home using https://www.airbnb.com/s/San-Marcos–TX–United-States/homes. Camping is also available in the area if you are so inclined. \nFor those outing participants who have completed the Dive Authorization Course (DAC) or the former Diving for Science or Scientific Diver certification programs and are interested in performing a volunteer dive in Spring Lake on Sunday\, there is again an opportunity for you to perform a volunteer dive in the lake.  All requests to dive are now submitted through the online system. You can find the form using the following link. https://www.meadowscenter.txstate.edu/Stewardship/Diving/AquaCorps/volunteer-dive-request. \nPlease contact me with any questions. \n  \nSteve “Oggie” Ogden \n(214) 641-6013 \n

SUMMARY:Canceled: Local lake dive @ Lake Travis
DESCRIPTION:Scubadillos\, outing planned for July 26th is a Lake Travis boat dive. \nIt is Travis Time!!! Lake Travis that is.\, July 26-27. Put it on your calendar and join us! Lake Travis is located just to the northwest of Austin. We will go diving off the Giant Stride on: \n\nSaturday afternoon (1-5pm)\n\nNote that they also have slots for Saturday morning 8-12.30 and Sunday morning 8-12.30 if you want to do more diving. \nWhat is the Giant Stride\, you ask? The Giant Stride is a bona fide dive boat!!! On Lake Travis!!! Yes! So\, the Giant Stride is a Coast Guard certified 30 foot pontoon dive boat operating on Lake Travis. The boat operator is Lake Travis Scuba!! Check them out on the web (https://www.laketravisscuba.com/) \nCost and reservations: You will need to make your own reservations online at https://www.laketravisscuba.com/ and the cost is $65 pp. The Giant Stride will haul us out into the middle of Lake Travis. Depending on the temperament of the boat captain\, the Giant Stride will either drop us into the lake in the middle of nowhere; or if we ask politely\, Robert\, the boat captain\, has his favorite dive sites. Dive sites such as: Starnes Island\, Fiesta Haus Wall\, Oasis Wall\, The Shaker Plant\, West Point Cypress Creek Wall\, Wreck Alley. What is that? You say you have never heard of any of these dive sites? Well\, you have never been aboard the Giant Stride. Please come join us! It will be a blast! I promise. Note: make your reservations now at LakeTravisScuba.com. The boat is open to everyone and will fill up. \nEquipment: You must have all your equipment including weights and tanks and something to drink. The diving fee to board the Giant Stride is $65. For $65\, we all get to take a 4 hour\, 2 tank\, dive excursion to wondrous dive sites across Lake Travis!! These dive sites are only accessible by boat so the dive fee is well worth it!!! Please come join us! \nNote: They also offer two tank rental for $25 where they will have the tanks available on the boat. Lake level is low and it’s a pain to haul your own tanks down from the parking lot to the dock so I would highly recommend renting tanks. \nDinner: After the conclusion of our Giant Stride morning and afternoon dive we can all go eat dinner. I have heard the Austin area has some decent restaurants. Location TBD and suggestions are appreciated. \nWhere to stay: Hotels range from $100 to $200 per night. You can also check out the B&B and AirBnb. Or go primitive and camp at https://windypointpark.com/camp-picnic/ and possibly dive there.

SUMMARY:Wine and Cheese / Arctic dive @ Marietta’s Landing\, OK
DESCRIPTION:It is time for wine\, cheese\, and cold-water diving. The Diving Rebels and the Scubadillo\nDive club will be at the Marietta Landing campground at Lake Murray State Park\n(Oklahoma) on Saturday\, February 28 th for the traditional Wine & Cheese Party / Arctic\nDive. We would like to invite any interested divers and non-divers to join us. Lake\nMurray State Park is located about twenty-four miles north of the Texas border just off I-\n35 and 7 miles northeast of Marietta\, OK. This is an easy day trip. The judging will begin about 3:30 PM. So\, scour your wine cellar\nor favorite liquor store to bring your best/worst red and white wines that will be judged\nby an erudite panel of vintner wannabes who will closely taste and scrutinize the entries\nfor bouquet\, flavor\, clarity\, and all such hoity-toity wine things. We will award “winner”\ngift certificates for first prize for the best red and white wines. Also award a “loser” gift\ncertificate for the worst wine. After the wine contest\, we will choose the best cheese\,\nand the winner will also win a gift certificate (no entries for worst cheese\, please!!). We\nneed judges for both contests\, so if you are not a contest participant or related to a\ncontest participant and would like to judge\, please let me know.  Please bring your\nbottles uncorked to the judging site and place them in the provided labeled paper bags\nto maintain the “secrecy” of the process. After the conclusion of the contest\, please feel\nfree to incorporate the left-over wine and cheese into the forthcoming meal. \nFOOD\nThe Diving Rebels plan to serve a meal at about 4:30 pm\, consisting of a main dish of\nbrisket\, turkey\, and sausage. We are asking that you bring a favorite side item of either\na vegetable dish or dessert and your own drinks. We will also provide water and tea. To\nassist in meal planning and preparation\, we’re asking attendees to purchase tickets.\nThrough February 23 rd \, each ticket costs $10.
